What is the difference between ASIN and SKU on Amazon? If you are new to selling on Amazon or just starting with Amazon advertising, understanding these two identifiers is essential before you set up your first Amazon PPC campaign. In this video, I break down exactly what ASIN means, what SKU means, and how they relate to each other inside the Amazon ads platform.
When you enter the Amazon advertising console and start building your Amazon sponsored products campaigns, you will see both ASIN and SKU displayed in the ads section. They look completely different and serve different purposes, which can cause confusion if you do not know what each one represents. I walk you through real examples from inside the platform so you can see exactly where these identifiers appear and how to use them correctly.
ASIN stands for Amazon Standard Identification Number. It is a unique identifier that Amazon creates and assigns to every product on the marketplace. Every ASIN starts with B0 followed by 10 alphanumeric characters. This identifier is public, meaning customers can see it in product URLs and you will use it when setting up Amazon PPC ads, running search term reports, and doing product targeting in your Amazon advertising campaigns.
SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit. Unlike ASIN, SKU is something you create yourself for internal inventory management purposes. The best practice is to make your SKUs descriptive so you can easily identify products as your inventory grows. For example, you might name a SKU something like GREEN-XXL to indicate a green product in extra extra large size. This makes it much easier to manage your catalog when you have hundreds or thousands of products.
One important relationship to understand is that one ASIN can contain multiple SKUs. For example, you might have the same product with different fulfillment methods like FBA and FBM, or you might have bundles. Towards Amazon, this appears as a single ASIN, but internally in your inventory you track each variation with separate SKUs. This is critical knowledge when you are setting up Amazon sponsored ads because when you search for an ASIN to add to your campaign, you may see several different SKUs appear.
Inside the Amazon ads platform, you will primarily search for products by ASIN when creating campaigns. However, when you run Amazon sponsored product reports, you will notice that some reports contain ASINs while others contain SKUs depending on what data you are analyzing. Similarly, when pulling reports through Seller Central, which is the main platform for managing everything related to selling on Amazon, some reports will show only SKUs.
The key thing to remember is that ASIN is public and assigned by Amazon as the unique product identifier that appears in product URLs, targeting settings, and search term reports. SKU is private and internal to your organization for tracking inventory, managing bulk upload files, and internal catalog reports. Understanding this distinction will help you navigate both Seller Central and the Amazon advertising platform more effectively as you scale your Amazon PPC management and grow your business.
