Have you ever set a $200 daily budget on Amazon and then noticed Amazon charged you $300? You might be wondering if Amazon is overcharging you or if something is wrong with your Amazon advertising campaigns. In this video, I explain exactly how budget and spend work in Amazon PPC so these numbers will stop confusing you.

Understanding the difference between spend and budget is fundamental for anyone running Amazon ads. Spend represents what you have already paid as a result of running your Amazon advertising campaigns. It is calculated by multiplying the number of clicks by your average cost per click. Budget, on the other hand, is the amount you are willing to spend on your Amazon PPC campaigns. It does not mean you will spend exactly that amount. You may underspend or you may overspend depending on how the Amazon algorithm manages your campaigns.

When you set a daily budget for your Amazon sponsored products or Amazon sponsored brand campaigns, your ads will appear on the keywords you are targeting. Once the budget is depleted, your campaign stops and your ads are no longer visible in search results. The key difference is simple: spend is a result while budget is a setting. Spend tells you what already happened and budget is what you are planning to spend daily throughout the month.

One of the most common questions I receive about Amazon PPC management is why daily spend sometimes exceeds the set budget. If you set your budget to $20 per day, you might see days where spend is $12, $16, or exactly $20. But then one day it might jump to $31 or even $40. This can be double what you set and it catches many people off guard.

Amazon explains this through their budget calculation system. You have the ability to limit how much Amazon can overspend per day with settings of up to 25% or up to 100% more in one day. The budget is actually calculated on a monthly level. So if you set a daily budget of $20, Amazon can spend around $600 per month total. When you underspend on certain days, that unused budget accumulates. If you saved $8 one day and $4 another day, that is $12 of unused budget. Amazon can then increase your ad spend by that accumulated amount on high demand days.

The Amazon advertising algorithm automatically increases your budget up to your daily average. If there is enough room from what you did not spend in previous days, it can increase ad spend more than you anticipated on any given day. This is how Amazon PPC optimization works at the platform level and it is part of what you agree to when starting your Amazon sponsored ads campaigns.

The biggest takeaway from this video is that spend is what you paid and budget is what you are planning to spend per day on average. Do not get surprised when your daily spend goes higher than expected because this is exactly how Amazon advertising works. Understanding this distinction will help you better manage your Amazon PPC strategy and set realistic expectations for your Amazon ads cost.

This knowledge is essential for proper Amazon PPC campaign management and will help you make better decisions when setting budgets across your Amazon advertising campaigns.
