In this video, I explain the difference between your bid and your actual cost per click (CPC) in Amazon PPC advertising. If you set a $2 bid on a keyword, that does not mean you will pay $2 for every click. Understanding this distinction is essential for anyone running Amazon sponsored products campaigns or managing their Amazon advertising strategy.

When you set a bid in Amazon ads, you are telling the platform the maximum amount you are willing to pay for a single click on that keyword. However, the actual CPC you pay is determined by the auction system and various factors within your Amazon PPC campaign settings. Your cost per click is almost always different from your bid amount.

With Amazon sponsored products and Amazon sponsored brand ads, you only pay when someone clicks your ad. Impressions are free with these ad types. However, with Amazon sponsored display ads, you may get charged for impressions, which I will cover in a later video.

The formula for calculating your CPC is simple: total ad spend divided by total clicks. For example, if you spent $95 and received 100 clicks, your average CPC would be $0.95. Keep in mind this is an average across all clicks. Some individual clicks may have cost $1.20 while others cost $0.75.

Several factors influence what you actually pay for each click in your Amazon PPC advertising. Competition plays a major role, as does the keyword itself. High search volume keywords with strong relevance tend to be more expensive. Your niche also affects pricing. Additionally, Amazon shows suggested bids, but these change frequently and should not be relied upon entirely.

There are settings within campaign manager that can increase your bid beyond the amount you originally set. Dynamic bidding allows Amazon to bid up or down from your base bid depending on the likelihood of conversion. Placement adjustments and audience adjustments also combine to modify your final bid in the auction. This means if you set a $1.50 bid, your actual CPC could end up significantly higher depending on these settings.

I also explain why a lower CPC is not always better for your Amazon ppc optimization efforts. In one example, bidding $0.40 per click resulted in 50 clicks, $20 in spend, but zero orders. Bidding $1.20 per click resulted in 20 clicks, $24 in spend, but two orders. The higher bid placed the ad in better positions where more qualified shoppers clicked and converted.

When you bid too low, Amazon may show your ad in less visible placements where clicks are less likely to convert. Bidding more aggressively can help your ad appear higher in search results, leading to more meaningful clicks from shoppers ready to buy.

The key takeaway from this video is that cost per click represents the average amount you paid for clicks, and it is almost always different from your bid. A cheap click that never converts costs you more than an expensive click that results in a sale. This understanding is fundamental to effective Amazon ppc management and building a profitable Amazon advertising campaign.
